Re: [PLUG] Memory hardware questions

Oh, yeah. Maybe an add-on ATA133 controller and a compatible drive would make a difference. I upgraded my father's PC from a Pentium 233MHz to a Duron 1.2GHz. Although it has other problems with corrupt software and all, I think it is still slow because the 2.5G drive is from a pre-ATA33 generation. I see and hear a lot of drive activity. I'm going to pop in a 20G, ATA100, 7200 rpm drive. That and a fresh OS install. I have no doubt that the system will become significantly quicker.

That reminds me. In Window$, defragging the swap file will make a big difference. I always make a partition to move the swap file to, either temporarily while defragging, or permanently so the swap file will not get fragmented to begin with.

Also, I posted an article about upgrading the CPU. It's possible to upgrade the Pentium 75 to an AMD K6-2 400MHz CPU. I don't know if it would be worth the cost or trouble, but it can be done.

In any case, the RAM upgrade and some software tweaks should notably improve responsiveness.
