I have the USB quickcam as well -- came free when I signed up for Verizon DSL last summer -- and it works OK. I use the kernel driver from here: http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/ along with the webcam app from the xawtv distribution. The quality is pretty poor though. But the "webcam" app is reasonably easy to set up once you have the driver installed.

xawtv uses Video4Linux..as long as you have a v4l driver for the webcam you pick you should be fine. It looks like there's a list here: http://www.exploits.org/v4l/
