I will try debian on Monday but I was wondering if anyone else had recently had to install Linux on an Intel motherboard with an on board AIC-7869 SCSI controller. I've used the aic7xxx driver with a 7890 and a... 4940 was it? Anyways, the driver is fine. I found that on my old work station if I enabled the probe all luns option for the module (I was using an initrd), it'd hang. This was a cdrom issue. Disconnecting the cdrom let me boot and disabling that option let me boot and use the cdrom. Since I didnt have a cd changer, turning it off wasnt problematic for me. That should give you some things to look into. YOu may just need a different boot disk. I believe redhat my have some as errata.
