[PLUG] DSL, Cheaper..

Greetings,

Some of y'all may know about my non-profit, and general attitude
towards energy conservation, consumer issues, and frugal attitude, keeping
bills low, etc.

Well, I've discovered the following deal for those of you who want DSL
or other broadband but find $50 (49.95) too much of a difference between
what dialup charges, or just don't want to spend that $50. The key... ?
you can get Verizon DSL (yes, I know, PPPOE, DHCP..) for only $40(39.95)
(Or maybe even for those of you who are already on verizon paying
$49.95.. although I don't know how you'd go about switching.. maybe cancel
and then re-sign up?)

No, I'm not an employee of verizon or any of the other companies
involved.. I'm just a cheap bastard who can't comprehend paying $50 for
broadband when I am paying $0 for dialup. I also know a half-decent deal
when I see one, and wish to get locked into that pricepoint. Apparently,
the deal is only good for this month, and next. (I recommend getting it
this month, because there is an additional rebate on the modem.)

It's been confirmed that this is not just a $39.95 the first-few-months
deal, but a $39.95 perpetual pricing.

What do you do? Go to bestbuy stores, and sign up on their
kiosk... this is only applicable to former Bell Atlantic areas of
Verizon.. but it doens't hurt to try even if you're not. ;) You will see
and select the deal.. it is the "buy my modem" deal.. however.. how they
know whether or not you buy your modem, I haven't been able to figure out
yet. . other than the fact that you need a modem that is compatible with
verizon's network to use it. :)

Please note that neither verizon nor bestbuy employees seem too clueful
about the deal, but yes it does exist (and was confirmed by a verizon
person.)

Oh, also, this is not a less-speed offer.. (some of the other companies
are now offering a half-speed DSL for less money, as a test.. I think
uhm.. sprint maybe? is offering 200k for $21.95 and I think I heard
of another offering some lower speed dsl for $30) This is 768k/128k DSL.

I guess that's it for now.

If you want to know about my nonprofit the url is in my .sig below, or
other consumer/frugal issues, feel free to talk to me privately.
