I was looking through freshmeat.net for OpenGL stuff to play with (on my new video card), and found gliv. It's just a (.jpg/.png/etc) image viewer, except it uses OpenGL (which does 2D stuff also, not just 3D), and will use OpenGL hardware acceleration if you have it. It also has a "Try to load every file" option. The result is ridiculously fast image viewing.
