Use a boot floppy or the install cdrom and do: boot: boot vmlinuz /dev/hda4 # or something like that or... go into rescue mode, mount /dev/hda4 ; /mnt/myroot ; chroot /mnt/myroot This is just from memory so you'll have to sort out the specifics.
