It was the non-breaking space. I searched for \xA0 as a regular
expression, and found 74 of them in the script. I don't know if the
author inadvertantly put them in or whether some intermediary converted
a tab character to a string of them. The author sent it to me pasted
into an email, which I, in turn, copied and pasted into a text editor
for saving.
