Video from a PC will look very bad on a TV.

There are physical magnification screens which can be placed in front of the monitor. A large monitor might help, too. A 19" monitor is a reasonable size and price.

I often use pico for text editing and occasionally pine for e-mail. Both are text-based and have simple key commands.

Instead of magnification software, why not set X to a virtual low resolution? Everything will look big and the screen will follow the mouse, so it acts like magnification.

Why use text-to-speech if the person can use text? The more specialized software that is used the more limited the options are.
