You can only send email using SMTP, you can't retrieve it (unless
it's delivered to an SMTP daemon on your local machine). I was just
talking about telneting to port 25, which just lets you make
deliveries to an SMTP daemon.

Your friend wants to retrieve her email from Hotmail on another
system using a POP3 or IMAP4 mail user agent. fetchmail is probably
what she wants, provided that Hotmail allows you to retrieve mail
using one of those protocols. I have no clue whether they do or not.
Another option would be email forwarding, provided Hotmail offers
that.
