Preserving outdated content is much less important, probably in decreasing importance the older you get. Although, I probably would agree that archiving it is not a bad thing if it isn't too much of a burden. IMHO, how elimination of 404 errors is achieved is not as big of a concern as long as it is transparent in most cases, and accessible in something reasonably close to all cases.
