The problem with setting up old machines with linux is they dont have enough horse power to run any of the GUI's. You can forget about any 32 bit applications so you left with teaching Shell scripts and OS commands. Compile times on it are also painfull if you want to teach c. I just put together a old 386, upgraded the ram to 8 megs(cost $4), 4X cd-rom($10), SB16 ($4), new CMOS batter ($3). For a little over $20 I gave new life to a free machine. I still can't even play a MP3's on it which was my original intent. Your point is a good one what you learn in school is hard to break away from later in life. My curious side opened me up to Linux when I saw a Redhat 3.0 book that had a free cd inside. So I bought it and began my anti-M$ journey. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Schwier" <schwepes@netaxs.com> To: <plug@lists.phillylinux.org> Sent: Friday, October 18, 2002 9:54 AM Subject: Re: [PLUG] OT: Linux Business Forum > The problem is simply the time to go through learning Unix.
