Most likely what is happening is that you have duplicate entries in
/etc/init.d and /etc/xinetd.d.  This happend to me with pure-ftpd.  I
changed one to pure_ftpd and it worked like a champ.

The alternative command to use is chkconfig.  Check the man page for
further details.
