Another vote for the external modem option.  Love my Zoom 56k Dualmode. 
Besides, with ps2 mice and all the usb stuff, what else is your serial
port doing?  And seeing the lights flash and glow is a comforting
reminder that all is well with your (slow compared to broadband)
connection.
