Well, there was an article, referenced on /. a couple of months back,
about building your own UPS, though I can't seem to make Google
cough it up at the moment.

The battery inside a UPS isn't rocket science. It's a battery, much
like your car battery. There're some moderately (though not
especially) complicated electronics inside to regulate power-flow,
but unless APC is a bunch of gouging bastards, that won't be part of
what needs replacing.

On the other hand, I picked up a couple of 1100s at MicroCenter (on
sale, admittedly, but new) for $150 apiece maybe four months ago
now. I'd look around for that kind of deal. (I'd maybe try to avoid
*shipping* on this though, unless there's a set rate. Things is
*heavy*...)

Erm, maybe, maybe not. The APC boxes I've looked over very clearly
list a VA rating (only but I hadn't a clue what it *meant* until the
description here, but that's my fault). A model number's a model
number, they can base it on whatever they think reasonable, I'd
expect.
