I'm pretty close to moving my main workstation uses at home off of an IA32 machine and onto either an Ultra 30 or Ultra 60[1], and I have just one lingering doubt after playing with Solaris 9 enough to be sure that most things would be okay. On both my workstations (at home and at work), I use XFree86 with Xinerama to map two displays into a single desktop. The configuration for this is remarkably painless, but more importantly it *works*, without fail. I'm sure I can get an extra video card into an Ultra workstation... but can I make Sun's X server use it in a Xinerama-like way? (I guess I'd settle for having to make XFree86 install... but that seems awfully backwards.) Has anyone done this under Solaris? [1] Which I'll probably buy from http://www.anysystem.com/. I can't recommend them in the "Yes, I'm a loyal customer because they're great," sort of way because I haven't purchased anything from them yet, but they've got Sun hardware (in all classes, even including new SunFire stuff) at reasonable prices, aimed not at being some business's chosen VAR but at the "would buy from eBay and worry about quality" crowd, which I haven't so much seen anyone else doing. (Of course, I couldn't buy from them at work, since we really need to have the service contract assurances, but for a small to medium business that's up to needing a workgroup or enterprise server, they might also be a good choice.) -- gabriel rosenkoetter gr@eclipsed.net Attachment:
