I have a motherboard where just such a part (a NEC K2941) actually fell off the board near the CPU voltage controller. When I received the motherboard, it was loose in the packaging, but didn't appear otherwise damaged/fried. I had no idea what it was, and Google was not helpful, but this certainly was.
