Although package managers can get in your way, they do allow most folks to install a package that will likely work if all the necessary dependencies are present, and it works. Of course at times I'm paranoid and run checkinstall, which gives me the best all worlds, namely a package in my desired form, which can be uninstalled or updated if necessary, but one that can be configured for my system because it's compiled on my system.
