Re: [PLUG] X screen resolution

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Depending on your X configuration most of the distributions I have seen default to three settings of "640x768" "800x600" "1024x768"

With these default settings you can switch between them with
<CTRL> <ALT> <+> or <CTRL> <ALT> <->

The plus and the minus are on the key pad.

On my system I have it set up for 32bpp at 1600x1200 as the default.

The config file is in /etc/X11/

Section "Screen"
   Driver "SVGA"
   Device "ATI XPERT 128 AGP"
   Monitor "GS790"
   DefaultColorDepth 32
   BlankTime 0
   SuspendTime 0
   OffTime 0
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 8
      Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 15
      Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 16
      Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 24
      Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 32
      Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection
EndSection

Now I am still using Xfree86 version 3 because it works and I spent some time setting it up and don't want to go through it again.

Greetings,
this may sound like a stupid question, but I normally don't use GUI with Linux. I used to dealing with GUI on M$ Windows machines (as clients) and plain text on Linux (as servers).
That said, here's my question: can you easily change the screen resolution in X after system install? (I guess the minimum is to change a config file and restart the X server...?)

Thanks,
Wayne
