[PLUG] mounted shares from OS X to Linux?

I am mounts samba shares from my big disk linux server to OS X, but all 
of the network transactions seem incredibly slow. I had these shares 
setup via samba to accommodate windows machines.  I am also sharing 
them NFS which is what I normally mount with in linux - however, I was 
having trouble with NetInfo NSF & automount. Would NFS be faster, or 
should I try configuring AppleTalk? Or do I have something 
misconfigured?
