Anyone have opinions on cru (bru) vs. veritas utilities? We have 1.5 TB that needs to be backed up to tape nightly. We have a tape system that can handle this: 100 GB/tape. We are using dump currently. This has successfully restored from bare metal to a working system. However, there are some problems with dump: 1. allegedly, it's not recommended for the ext2 fs: http://lwn.net/2001/0503/a/lt-dump.php3 2. Although dump works great w/ multiple tapes, I never got a restore script to work that way so I had manually change tapes to get a restoration done. Ugly. 3. restore is really slow. A better utility would keep a current list of files to restore that can be browsed off-line then it would automatically change tapes to restore just the files that I need. This is similar to problem #2. 4. If #3 were in place, then we could probably have compression enable to squeeze out at least 40% more/tape. Beyond these simple things, dump/restore works great. Any utility that does dump/restore plus the above 4 is welcome, OSS or proprietary. Thanks for listening.
