It's not wise to assume such things when talking about consulting. But your assumption turned out to be right in this case (happily).

It would be better if they had done both. These things are not mutually exclusive.


If the cost is deferred and not much higher, isn't it better to employ people than to use technology to displace human expertise?

I was only there to put the thing in place. Then they staffed up the maintenance team and IMO they could have done with one, maybe two people less than what they hired had they either paid more up front to take the time to put good free tools in place, or purchase proprietary tools (RHN being just one example)
