Then there is the drive controller, although that might be integrated on the mo'bo'.

Doesn't the NIC have and/or use memory? I think the NIC could cause a problem. It does seem to have something of a problem.

How about disabling power management in the BIOS, keep apmd off, and just boot into single user mode to see if the problem still occurs.
