I'm really interested in an applet so it could be launched from a browser - this of course would be need to be a local LAN app.

I'm considering starting a project for this on source forge - since I don't see anything like it now. Are there any java developers who would be interested in working on this? Building a baisc word processor & spreadsheet capable of reading and writing (rudimentary?) MS Office docs? I think the OpenOffice filters would go a long way to helping with this. let me know if you are interested- or know of a project already doing this.

Can't help on java, but abiword and gnumeric do decent jobs of
understanding doc and xls respectively. In cases where they don't do
good enough jobs, OpenOffice (formerly StarOffice) gets more details
right, at the expense of slamming your CPU and imposing a bad
interface for no good reason.
