I talked to Theo shortly after that announcement. There is a hackathon coming up where the DARPA grant was supposed to subsidize flying in 60 developers, and they are already locked into this since the developers have already paid for their tickets expecting to expense this with the OpenBSD project. Anyway I asked Theo about the best way to get money directly to the project without middlemen and he says the Paypal link on their donations page goes 100% to the project without any skimming (beyond Paypal's minimal fee).

Like Theo or not, OpenBSD has been making some incredible strides in security that we're all going to benefit from sooner or later (like OpenSSH). If you can afford to send $50 or so to help them out, they could really use it right now.

Officially there is no reason yet for the sudden loss of funding. We don't know whether it was politically motivated or not (though I tend to think Theo's anti-war comments could have something to do with it).
