Thanks! I haven't actually tried the three dashes on SuSE yet, but at least I have something to try now. Testing under RedHat 9.0:

"timeout=3" is ignored and a default is assumed

"-timeout=3", "--timeout=3", or "---timeout=3" set the timeout to three seconds

So, if RedHat and SuSE agree on the three-dash format, all is well. This is important since the auto.* files will be propagated to all computers via scp or rsync.
