Anybody like the D-Link RDI-614+ wireless router? Looks like a good
deal over at ecost.com. Nice rebate on the refurbished model running at
the moment, $69 - $40 in rebates. Plus it's a 4 port switch. Anyone
have one of these?

I do have a different model D-Link, the DWL-900AP+ which has the same guts as the Linksys WAP-11 but more feature-filled firmware. The only complaint I had about it until today was range, not knowing if my laptop was the problem or not (Powerbooks are known for bad reception). It's a pretty configurable little box.

Today I had a pair of Dell 1184's come in. I took one apart, tried to get photos and put it back together (the closeups didn't come out because the Fujifilm FinePix 2650 has a lousy macro function). Macstumbler is showing the Dell to have a measurably strong signal, and as I've been using it for the last hour in places that the D-Link had a hard time reaching, I'll say that it does have a better range than the D-Link. The Dell cost me $73 plus tax, free shipping, because I bought it through a government worker. I ordered the unit thursday, it arrived today.

The box has one uplink port, for the Internet, plus four LAN ports. There is also a wireless chipset in there (duh). The antenna is soldered on, but should be straightforward to hack a real connector onto. There is a header on the board that looks like it might be for a serial console or something, I'm not sure yet. Gonna have to dig my voltmeter out of storage and see if there is any juice going into those pins.

The best part is, as I mentioned before, this thing runs Linux. Each of the LAN ports is an eth* adapter so you can get into some crazy cool network segmenting if you wish.

I'm going to try to get my own custom firmware in there to achieve some of the "wish list" items and report back on my findings, and make my firmware available for downloading somewhere.
