If leaving the drive unmounted doesn't produce the same problem then 
you've found the likely cause.  Personally though after the 2nd drive of 
a particular brand to fail I always want a different brand or at least 
model.  In particular although you don't mention a model, I hope they're 
not 75 GXPs that you're getting replaced.
