Didn't read the whole thread, sorry if I'm misinterpretting. You can change your default colormap for X in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Look for the "DefaultDepth" config line and change it to whatever you want. Also, you can boot into runlevel 3 (change initdefault line in /etc/inittab from "5" to "3"). Then you can use "startx" to start X windows when you want to (mimicking Dos/Win 3.1).
