If xfs it the only way X gets its fonts then what "did it" was restarting xfs via reboot. You could have also done the same:


cp vga.pcf /path
mkfontdir /path
/etc/init.d/xfs restart

The only reason to restart X was to get it to re-read the fonts. You might have also needed an "xset -fp rehash", but I dont think so. I'm farily sure you'd have only needed to use xset if you were using fontdir paths in XF86Config and didn't want to restart X.
