I doubt it is a config issue, unless you know for a fact that the phone line involved supports higher speeds -- by testing, using another box. Modem speeds are negotiated at the time of connection. Depending upon the condition of the phone line (line noise, loss, etc.), you will get a speed someplace between 33K and 56K initially. Then as the connection continues, the speed may go up or, more usually, down. The phone company does not support anything faster than 9600 (9.6K) on a POTS line, if I remember correctly... might only be 4800. That is all the line is tariffed to support. Higher speeds usually work, but if they don't, the Phone Company won't do anything for you. T.T.F.N. William H.
