New at gpg. Why does kmail report some signed messages as signed (e.g. LeRoy

the signature (e.g. Jeff Abrahamson's of 2/9)?

It all depends on how the message is signed.

gpg --help has this to say about signing

-s, --sign [file] make a signature
--clearsign [file] make a clear text signature
 -b, --detach-sign make a detached signature

Enigmail uses the -s for signing whereas others mail agents use either a detached signature or a clearsign signature. I also sign my messages using mime which does not always work with Windows systems.

In the Enigmail howto that is referenced in my signature I spend a lot of time on gpg. This might help you.
