gpg --help has this to say about signing -s, --sign [file] make a signature --clearsign [file] make a clear text signature -b, --detach-sign make a detached signature Enigmail uses the -s for signing whereas others mail agents use either a detached signature or a clearsign signature. I also sign my messages using mime which does not always work with Windows systems. In the Enigmail howto that is referenced in my signature I spend a lot of time on gpg.
