I've found a lot of glib stuff makes my life easier.  As to threads,
it was there, and is basically a wrapper around pthreads.

I used gtk for almost nothing at all in that example.  Here's a
version with no glib/gtk.  Link against pthread and it fails,
otherwise it succeeds.
