[PLUG] Dual Layer DVD writers - experiences?

Thinking about picking up a DVD+-R/RW drive, possibly one of the new 
Dual Layer ones.

With the DL drives, is it simply a matter of creating a larger 
filesystem on the disc (in other words, the drive does all the work), 
or are there additional tools required (in other words, you need new 
applications that understand the DL drives)?
