I am getting fdisk errors and segfaults.  Here is the output of 
/sbin/fdisk /dev/hdb:

   Warning: too many partitions (16, maximum is 8).

When I try to print (p) the partition table, I get

   Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2434 cylinders
   Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes


   16 partitions:

When I try to delete (d) a partition, I get

   Partition number (1-4):

any number I enter from 1 to 4 results in a segfault and a return to the 
prompt.

I can mount the drive as /dev/hdb1.  I get the full 20 g in that single 
partition, and can read the contents, but not execute any of the 
executables (I tried some safe ones just to see if they would run.)

I guess I could just delete all of the files, but where does that leave me?
