You are sending directly from your desktop. Yeah... that's bad for Verizon, m'kay?


Verizon does CBV (CallBack Verification). This means that when you connect to them, they will in return connect right back to you on the SMTP service port. If it doesn't get a connection, your transaction will be dropped. Most likely, the other verizon.net emails went through your MX (ftp.ece, still, right?) and since you're trying to send this through the desktop, Verizon is snapping you off in the middle. Send the email through ftp and I'll bet it gets through.
