At least on SuSE, the installer generally handles this.  It detects
installed partitions, asks if you want to update them.  If not, you just
point it at empty partitions or other space, and it installs a new copy
in that location.

If you're not sure, it's good to make a backup and/or install to a
different disk, unplugging your working disk during the install.  Unless
someone can tell you Ubuntu has a safe installer, I'd be a little
paranoid and protect your existing system.  Once it's installed, you
just need to work out the boot setup.  If your existing systems uses
lilo or grub as the primary boot loader, just boot to whatever os you
installed that from, and add an entry for your newly installed system.
