Yes, FireFox has hidden and in my experience a lot of undocumented

Does Thunderbird have an equivalent, and if so, how can I access it as there is no url field?

All Mozilla-based apps store preferences in prefs.js. This file is located in your .mozilla/.firefox/.thunderbird profile directory. You can manipulate any setting that can be set by editing that file. The (non-default) settings from about:config are read from and written to prefs.js.
