Bill:

I cannot give you much info about the gnome term (I've gradually become
a 99% KDE user) but here's what I've done in similar circumstances:

  1. Did you change anything?  .bashrc file?  .profile?  .bash_profile?
     This can screw you up royally.   I know from personal experience.

  2. Try xterm, eterm, or rxvterm - any other term - to see what happens.
     If one of them works then there's some problem with the gnome 
     terminal program or configuration thereof.  If none of them work the 
     I'd really suspect item #1 (above).
