Hmm, nothing in messages.
How about the other two?

Does CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG suggest recompiling my kernel? I'd like to avoid that.
Well, you can continue to have no information about why its failing to work, or you can recompile your modules (those options should only effect usbcore and usb_storage) to provide useful info.
