smartmontools or hddtemp will check this for you.  hdparm will also let
you do a lot of other kinds of checks and let you fiddle with hard drive
settings.  munin or mon or nagios can be set up to monitor the output of
these commands to let you know when there's a problem (actually
smartmontools can be configured to do it's own reporting, the others are
one-off tools, and would have to be wrapped by a monitor/reporter to get
alerts)
