Dumb question: how do I check this?

Since it's a 2.6 kernel, you may have a /proc/config.gz which is a gzip of the .config file that was used to generate the running kernel.

Can't find /proc/config.gz, but there is a file called /proc/ide/drivers with the contents:

   ide-cdrom version 4.61
   ide-disk version 1.18

so I guess "ide-cd" is loaded.

Any ideas about the white noise problem?
