IP forwarding is working if I log in to the Windows machine, but not if any of the other family members do. I have checked the network TCP/IP settings and they seem to be the same for all profiles, i.e. the IP of the Linux "router" is set as the default gateway. Any ideas?

If it works for you and not for anyone else, going through the same machines, then you need to check the Windows box for differences in the network settings on the user accounts. You may have changed something to make this work in your environment that makes this work that the others have not set.

The perplexing thing is, I don't see any differences.

P.S. A little bit more detail would make this easier to comment on, as well. Are they connected to a switch?

/--> win98 machine (192.168.0.1)
No ISP --> DSL Modem --> Linux machine (eth0/192.168.0.3) --> hub (via Linux eth1)/
\--> other (192.168.0.2)file server only)

Wireless through an AP?

No. 10-base-T

What are the firewall rules on the Linux box, if any?

Default IP Masq rules in rp-pppoe setup script. Firestarter defaults for IP forwarding.

How about policy routing? Things like that...

I installed rp-pppoe and set up both with included scripts. Never edited iptables directly.
