The reason for the OT is that I think the problem is on the Windows 98 side of a Samba connection.

I am using my Linux computer for IP forwarding through a Samba network. The computer with the problem is a Windows 98se machine that uses user profile log ins. IP forwarding is working if I log in to the Windows machine, but not if any of the other family members do. I have checked the network TCP/IP settings and they seem to be the same for all profiles, i.e. the IP of the Linux "router" is set as the default gateway. Any ideas?

If it works for you and not for anyone else, going through the same machines, then you need to check the Windows box for differences in the network settings on the user accounts. You may have changed something to make this work in your environment that makes this work that the others have not set.

P.S. A little bit more detail would make this easier to comment on, as well. Are they connected to a switch? Wireless through an AP? What are the firewall rules on the Linux box, if any? How about policy routing? Things like that...
