I see modules loaded are for the via sound card, and presumably that's the
onboard one. Do you get sound if you plug speakers into that port? But
I also see some that look like they are for the Ensoniq. Hmmm.

I would suggest taking the plunge, and just install alsa. This means
installing alsa-base, -utils, and probably -oss for good measure. -utils
comes with a mixer utility (alsamixer) so you can play with volume
levels to see why you're not getting sound. You'll probably also need
the various alsa compatible sound daemon libraries, if you use one
(libesd-alsa0 for esound, arts is I think already linked to libasound,
and then libsdl-alsa for sdl apps).

I am not sure how you go about setting up multiple sound cards to work
concurrently with alsa, but you can prevent the via one from being
loaded by putting the module names in a file under
/etc/hotplug/blacklist.d/ (I think - double check the docs for hotplug).

This is still, as you can probably tell, a somewhat murky subject for
me. I can probably scrape a few more things out of my brain if the
above doesn't help.
