The logfile in /var/log is rotated each time X starts.

The logfile provides a key at the top (search for "Markers") which
indicates that "--" means "probed". That still leaves the intended
meaning somewhat vague to me, however. Did it probe that the depth
can be 24, or did it probe that the depth was set to 24?

Fortunately, another way to determine the depth is by using xwininfo:

	[mct@antarctica ~]$ xwininfo -root | grep Depth
	  Depth: 24

HTH,
-mct
