[PLUG] debian/ubuntu: updating the kernel with apt

When I installed this distro, the /boot partition was on /dev/hdb.
After some drive swapping, that partition is now on /dev/hda. Problem
is, when I do an apt-based kernel update, the process rewrites
/boot/grub/menu.lst back to hda.

<new sample>

title        Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.10-5-386
root        (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-386 root=/dev/hdb2 ro quiet splash
initrd        /boot/initrd.img-2.6.10-5-386
savedefault
boot

</new sample>

replaces or is prepended to

<old sample>

title        Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.8.1-3-386
root        (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-3-386 root=/dev/hda2 ro quiet splash
initrd        /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1-3-386
savedefault
boot

</old sample>

I assume that the location of the boot partition is stored somewhere so
that dpkg can figure out how to update the menu.lst. Does anyone know
where so that I can manually change it and avoid having to manually edit
menu.lst every time I update the kernel?
