I dislike Yahoo Groups as well, but fortunately there's an easy way to bypass the subscription process if you don't have (or don't want) a Yahoo login -- just send mail to <group>-subscribe@yahoogroups.com with the word "subscribe" in the Subject: line and an empty body.
