[PLUG] /dev/sequencer

I would like to play a .mid (MIDI) file and when I click on it in
Konqueror, an app called "KMid" is loaded but returns an error:
could not open /dev/sequencer
probably there is another program using it

In /dev, there is the following:
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 1 Mar 24 2002 sequencer

My user is a member of group "audio".
I am using what is essentially Debian Sarge (upgraded from Libranet of
years ago) and the Sarge version of KDE (3.3.2). I am using the Debian
stock kernel image 2.4.27-2-k7.
Other audio apps work fine with other types of files (but probably don't
use /dev/sequencer). XMMS and noatun just die when I try to get them to
play the .mid file. When I try to look at KMid's configuration (Settings
| MIDI Setup) it just repeats the above error and doesn't let me go further.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
