FWIW, it snaps right along using ATI drivers on Gentoo.  This is on a laptop
with an ATI FireGL T2, 1.7GHz Pentium M, and 2 GB RAM, using driver version
8.25.18.  It's already in Portage, which is nice, but the digest is wrong...
I had to do an
'ebuild /usr/portage/x11-misc/googleearth/googleearth-4_beta.ebuild digest'
to get it to actually install.
