[PLUG] need advice with alsa / stereo downmix

Hi all

Can anybody point me in the right direction, not too familiar
with ALSA setup; my current problem is:

mythtv box connected to STEREO (2-channel) amp/speakers, the problem
is that the setup sounds like its missing the center channel (where
the dialog is at), so it sounds like the dialog is weak. I can
bring back the motherboard built-in surround sound (ac97) and use
that and play around with alsa mixer again; I just thought that using
stereo audio would force the surround sound to "downmix" to stereo
(If i'm using the terminologies correctly).

If i cant fix this i'll probably be looking at adding real surround
amp/preamp setup and possibly add a center channel but I'm reluctant
as i'm perfectly happy with just stereo.

the mythbox is connected to an outboard edirol usb stereo dac--its
a usb plug with stereo outs (i think its uax-1).

any advice/help or point to right direction appreciated,

epike
